So, like, there was this whole thing where they were supposed to like announce Israk Hossein as the mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation, right? But then, the High Court was all, “Hold up a sec, we need to like, listen to the petition against stopping the gazette given by the Election Commission first.” And then on Tuesday, the judges set a day for the hearing. It was like Judge Mo. Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Judge Debashish Roy Chowdhury, you know? And like, the lawyer for the petitioner was this dude named Mohammad Hossain.

Back in like, February 1, 2020, there was this election for Dhaka South City Corporation, right? And then this Awami League candidate Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh won the mayor position. The Election Commission published the gazette with the election results on February 2. And then Taposh was all taking the oath and stuff, ready to be mayor and all. But, like, Israk Hossein from BNP was all like, “Nah, man, this election was all messed up and corrupt,” and he filed a case on March 3, 2020.

And then, after all that student movement and stuff, last year in like August, all the mayors from the city corporations got removed after the fall of the Awami League government. And then this additional secretary Shahjahan Mia took over as the administrator of Dhaka South City. And then on March 27, Israk Hossein was declared the mayor by the first district judge of Dhaka and the election tribunal judge Mo. Nurul Islam. The court was all like, “Yo, you gotta publish the gazette within 10 days.” So, after that order, the Election Commission published the gazette on April 27.

But then, they were like, “Wait, why are we stopping Israk Hossein from taking the oath of office and stuff?” So, these two dudes named Rafiqul Islam and Mamunur Rashid filed a rule against the decision to publish the gazette and the direction to stop Israk from taking the oath. And like, their lawyers were all like, “We thought we were gonna challenge this order, but then we didn’t.” And then this legal advisor dude was all like, “The Ministry of Law wanted this notification out ASAP, so we didn’t wait around for the tribunal to do anything. The term has ended, and the mayor position has been declared vacant through the ordinance.”

Later, Mamunur Rashid went to the High Court with a writ petition. In the writ, he’s questioning why the verdict from March 27 and the gazette from April 27 are considered illegal and why the directive to stop Israk Hossein from taking the oath is given. The court’s like, “Hmm, let’s think about this rule for a bit,” and they decided to like, stop the verdict and gazette proceedings. Meanwhile, Israk Hossein’s supporters have been like, blocking the city building in protest for the past few days. They’re really sticking to their guns on this one.

So, yeah, that’s the whole shebang with Israk Hossein and the whole mayor situation in Dhaka South City Corporation. It’s like a whole drama unfolding, man. Who knows what’s gonna happen next, right? Just gotta wait and see how it all plays out.
