In the sky of Bagerhat, a rare natural phenomenon called ‘Iridescent Cloud’ or rainbow cloud has been seen. On Friday (May 23), around 5 pm, this mesmerizing scene was visible in the western sky of the city. The sky was adorned with a shimmering aura of light pink, green, orange, purple, and golden colors over the dark clouds for about 15 minutes. Even after the aura of colors faded, it was still visible for a few moments.
Experts believe that the Iridescent Cloud is a type of optical (light-related) meteorological event. Normally seen in high-level stratospheric or cirrus clouds. When the sunlight is refracted and reflected through the tiny and uniform water droplets inside the clouds, the creation of this cloud phenomenon, resembling a rainbow, occurs. It is also known as ‘Cloud Iridescence’.
Residents of the Meethapukur area in Bagerhat city, like Masud, thought initially that someone had projected artificial light. Later, they realized it was a creation of nature itself. This is the first time in their life they have seen such colorful clouds. According to meteorologists, Iridescent Clouds are usually seen in the Himalayan region or in coastal areas. It is very rare and visible for a short period of time. Although not commonly seen in Bangladesh, it may occur during the change in weather conditions during summer evenings in the coastal regions.
Amirul Azad, an assistant meteorologist at the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, said that this is essentially a type of cloud called a ‘COTRA’ in scientific terms. It is not a common sight in the skies of Bangladesh. However, from the end of Baishakh to the middle of Jaishtha, this type of phenomenon can be observed occasionally. Usually, just after the rain stops, it can be seen at the precise moment of sunset. There is nothing to fear about it.
