Arrest of Jamaat Leaders in Microbus Robbery: Four Apprehended
In a daring act of robbery, four individuals associated with Jamaat-e-Islami were apprehended by the district detective branch (DB) police within 48 hours of an incident where they attacked a microbus carrying teachers and looted money and mobile phones on the Jamuna Bridge West Road in Sirajganj. The swift action by law enforcement led to the capture of the culprits, who were found in possession of several locally made weapons used in the robbery.
The Arrested Individuals
Among the arrested suspects, three individuals provided confessional statements in three separate courts on Wednesday afternoon. They were identified as Tushar Hossain, the son of Hamidul Islam from Mahimura No. 3 lane in Sirajganj Municipality, Tushar Ahmed Antar Khan, the son of Abdul Latif Khan from Raypur Uttarpara (Millgate No. 1) area, and Abdur Rahim Mondal, the son of Manik Mondal from Konabari village in Kamarkhanda Upazila. Additionally, another suspect, identified as Kechu, was captured in Suleiman Mondal’s house in Konabari village.
The Investigation and Operation
Najmul Hasan, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Sirajganj Detective Branch, shared that the robbery occurred on the night of March 9th, as the teachers were returning from a conference held by the Bangladesh Ideal Teachers Federation. The criminals intercepted the microbus near Dhan Research Institute in Konabari area of Kamarkhanda Upazila, creating a tense situation by puncturing one of the tires with a sharp object. Subsequently, a group of seven to eight armed robbers, brandishing local weapons, attacked the microbus, threatening the teachers and making off with seven mobile phones and approximately 77,000 taka.
The Police Action and Recovered Items
Responding to the incident, Superintendent of Police (SP) Faruq Hossain directed the formation of a team to track down the culprits, under the supervision of Additional SP (Crime and Ops) Mohammad Ziaur Rahman. With the assistance of Assistant SP Ekrumul Hossain from Kamarkhanda Circle and efficient detectives, the team identified and apprehended the suspects through meticulous surveillance and intelligence gathering. During the operation, law enforcement recovered a ramda, a sickle, a dagger, and an iron rod from the possession of the culprits. In addition, three mobile phones and 14,000 taka were seized as evidence.
Legal Ramifications and Past Allegations
It was revealed that one of the suspects, Kechu, is facing charges in 17 cases related to robberies, theft, and other criminal activities in Kamarkhanda. Similarly, Tushar Hossain has 11 cases pending against him in various police stations. Apart from Kechu, the remaining individuals have provided confessional statements in court. Dr. Mohammad Obaidullah Badi, a prominent Jamaat leader, has also been implicated in the case and has filed a complaint with the police.
