resignation-of-comilla-upazila-chairman-over-rohingya-womans-birth-certificate

So, like, there was this whole big thing in Comilla, you know? The chairman of the Chouddagram Union Parishad (UP) in Comilla, Mr. Abu Taher, got temporarily fired by the local government department. Why, you ask? Well, he allegedly gave a Rohingya woman a birth certificate and transferred his own user ID and password to someone else. And that’s a big no-no, apparently.

This all went down on Friday, May 2nd, when the Upazila Executive Officer of Chouddagram, Mr. Jamal Hossain, confirmed the whole shebang. The senior assistant secretary of UP-1 branch of the local government department, Touhid Elahi, signed an order stating that Chairman Abu Taher was temporarily fired for negligence in performing birth registration duties, lack of awareness, and proven allegations of legal violations.

Fast forward to June 11, 2023, when Immigration Police Humayra and Sharmin Akhtar caught two Rohingya women, who were trying to sneak into Vietnam. Turns out, they had conned Kazi Kabir Uddin of Dimatali village in the Chouddagram UP by pretending to be his daughters to get a birth certificate. Then, they used that certificate to get a national identity card (NID) and a passport.

The plot thickens on June 15 when Deputy Director of the Special Branch of Comilla District Police, Imam Hossain Badi, filed a case at the Chouddagram Police Station. And on June 27 of the same year, Humayra and Sharmin were arrested and sent to jail through court proceedings.

Chairman Abu Taher claims that he had received a notice to show cause from the Registrar General’s office regarding the birth certificate issuance incident and he had provided the appropriate response. Additionally, in the case filed by the Special Branch, the alleged father Kazi Kabir Uddin has been made an accused and the police have charged him in court.

Taher said, “I was actually a witness in that case, but they still fired me.” So, you see, even being a witness doesn’t guarantee job security in this crazy world, huh?

So, like, that’s the whole scoop on what went down in Comilla. Quite the drama if you ask me. But hey, that’s journalism for ya – always keeping things interesting and full of surprises.
