In a heart-wrenching incident that shook the city of Jashore, three children tragically lost their lives in separate drowning accidents on Wednesday, March 12, 2025. The incident unfolded in the Abhaynagar and Monirampur upazilas, claiming the lives of two girls and one boy. The entire community was left reeling from the devastating events that unfolded on that fateful day.
The first victim, a 2-year-old boy named Ariyan, drowned in a pond in Magura Gram, Abhaynagar Union of Prembag. Reports indicate that Ariyan fell into the pond while playing near his home on Wednesday morning. Despite efforts to rescue him, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the upazila health complex, leaving his family and neighbors in shock and mourning the loss of such a young life.
In another part of the city, tragedy struck again when a 10-year-old girl named Roksana Khatoon drowned while bathing in a pond with friends in Boukara Gram, Nowapara Paurashava. Roksana’s disappearance during the group activity sparked a frantic search by her companions, leading to her eventual rescue from the water. Unfortunately, despite being rushed to the upazila health complex, she could not be saved, leaving the community in mourning once more.
The circumstances surrounding Roksana’s tragic death raised questions about the emergency response protocols at the local health complex. Witnesses reported that upon arrival at the facility, Roksana was left unattended for nearly 30 minutes, prompting concerns about the quality of care provided. The delay in administering treatment was cited as a contributing factor to the young girl’s untimely demise, sparking outrage among residents and demands for accountability from healthcare officials.
Meanwhile, in the Monirampur upazila of Jashore, a 1.5-year-old girl named Arshi Khatoon met a similar fate while playing near a tubewell in Dhuligati Gram, Shyamkur Union. Arshi, the daughter of local resident Ikbal Hossain, was under the supervision of her mother when the tragic incident occurred. While her mother was occupied with household chores, Arshi wandered too close to the tubewell and fell into the water-filled container, prompting a frantic rescue attempt by her family.
Arshi was quickly retrieved from the tubewell and rushed to the upazila health complex for medical treatment. However, the severity of her condition necessitated her transfer to Jashore General Hospital for further care. Tragically, Arshi succumbed to her injuries en route to the hospital, marking yet another heartbreaking loss in the community and underscoring the need for increased vigilance around water sources, especially for young children.
As the sun set on Jashore that day, the echoes of grief reverberated throughout the city, leaving families shattered and communities grappling with the profound loss of three young lives. The tragic drownings serve as a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by water bodies, highlighting the importance of water safety education and proactive measures to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future. The resilience and strength of the community were put to the test as they came together to mourn the loss of their youngest members, underscoring the need for collective action to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents, especially the most vulnerable among them.
