Well, here we go again with the Bangladesh Garments Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) gearing up for their upcoming elections for the 2025-2027 term. The BGMEA recently held a press conference at the Westin Hotel in the capital city, where members of the association discussed the challenges and opportunities facing the country’s main export industry, the ready-made garment sector.
The event was attended by key figures such as Kazi Moniruzzaman, former president of the association, Mohammad Abul Kalam, managing director of the Chaity Group, and Faruk Hasan, former vice president of BGMEA. The conference was organized by Mustazirul Shovan Islam, managing director of the Sparrow Group.
During the conference, members of the association emphasized the importance of strong leadership and deep understanding in the face of global economic uncertainty, rising fuel crisis, dollar instability, and the challenges of transitioning to a more sustainable business model in the garment sector.
The panel leader, Mohammad Abul Kalam, highlighted the need for experienced leadership and a policy-driven approach to transform BGMEA into a modern and service-oriented organization. He also mentioned that the upcoming elections on May 21 will focus on digital transformation, one-stop services for members, training and financial support for new entrepreneurs, sustainable development plans for SME factories, promoting the use of renewable energy like solar power, and strengthening the ‘Made in Bangladesh’ branding internationally.
Kazi Moniruzzaman, the former vice president, emphasized the need for continuity in providing effective leadership to BGMEA, emphasizing that the organization is not just about garment exporters but a pillar of the country’s economy. He also reiterated the association’s commitment to supporting members through thick and thin, demonstrating their track record of resilience over the past two decades.
Members of the press raised various questions during the event, to which the association leaders responded by reaffirming their focus on standing by the members, amplifying their voices to the government and international forums, and sharing responsibilities with young entrepreneurs in shaping the future.
In conclusion, BGMEA seems to be on the right track towards addressing the current challenges and opportunities in the garment sector. The upcoming elections will set the course for the association’s future direction, focusing on innovation, service excellence, and sustainable practices to ensure the continued growth and success of the industry. Not really sure why this matters, but it seems like BGMEA is ready to face whatever comes their way, with a mix of experience, vision, and determination.
